This new body of work is actually a revisiting of old work that never saw the light of day. Starting out in school as a drawer/printmaker/painter, these themes have recurred many times. In recent years I’ve gone back to those ideas, first working them out on paper, and eventually making a leap to the darkroom, but with the camera-less method of photography known as “photograms”. As a tribute to one of the pioneers of the medium, Man Ray, whose creations were christened “Rayographs”, I have personalized my work with my own neologism, “Scurogram”.

The scurogams and drawings have a parallel development: starting as abstract sketches, I was inspired to rework the ideas in the darkroom after I was asked to be part of a group exhibition at Heights Arts in 2018 called Sticks and Stones. Working with that theme, I began to recreate the lines and patterns of my drawings onto photographic paper with the materials of sticks, stones, and other objects from nature, and eventually man made objects as well. The scurograms eventually grew larger in scale, which in turn inspired larger drawings. The large scale scurograms range in size from 30” x 40” and up, and the drawings go significantly larger than that.

This work had its first large scale exhibit at The Cleveland Print Room in 2019, in a two person show with the incredibly talented Rebekah Wilhelm, whose work echoes some of the same themes as mine.
